Asthma can be fatal: Remembering Ryan Gibbons

Asthma attacks can be life-threatening, as seen in the tragic case of 12-year-old Ryan Gibbons. In 2012, Ryan suffered an asthma attack at school but couldn’t access his inhaler, which was locked in the principal’s office due to school policy. Despite his friends’ efforts to carry him there, he passed away.
His mother, Sandra Gibbons, campaigned for change, leading to the passage of Ryan’s Law (Bill 135) in Ontario. This law ensures that students with asthma can carry their inhalers with a doctor’s note.
Ryan’s story serves as a heartbreaking yet powerful reminder of the importance of immediate access to life-saving medication.
