HE WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE—BUT THEN HE HUGGED ME LIKE I WAS FAMILY

I was just trying to get across 7th Street on my knee scooter, focused on not messing up my knee again. Then I heard someone call my name—Nico, a sweet kid from the special needs program at the local high school. He had made a glittery sign that said, “WE LOVE YOU, TYRELL.”

Nico had convinced his sister to skip class and come check on me, even though I wasn’t playing anymore. He wrapped his arms around me like I was still out there making game-winning plays. And then, with a shaky voice, he said, “I didn’t try out for Special Olympics soccer ‘cause I thought you’d be mad.”

I was confused. He explained that I had promised to coach him one day, but I got injured, and he didn’t want to play without me. It hit me hard. I’d let him down without even realizing it.

I realized I needed to show up for him. So, I told him I’d be there for his next practice, knee scooter and all. The next day, I showed up, and Nico introduced me to his teammates like I was a hero. I gave my first pep talk, and the kids actually listened.

In those moments, I remembered what I still had to give, even if I couldn’t play. Now, I help Coach Jalen, my therapy’s improving, and Nico’s the star goalie of the team.

Sometimes you don’t realize who you’re showing up for. Nico wasn’t supposed to be there that day, but thank God he was. He reminded me that my story wasn’t over—it was just starting a new chapter.

If this touched you, share it. You never know who might need a reminder that they still matter.
